why does polio attack at a young age and is it curable?

why is it that polio attacks only children below the age of five? And is it true that it is not curable for the rest of one's life?

1. There is no cure for polio, and it effects each person differently.
2. It depends on what stages of polio or post polio you are suffering from regarding another illness. In both cases I would say that since your body is weakened it may be harder for you to recover from most things compared to a normal healthy person.
