What is High Risk Pregnancy?

What is high risk pregancy? What are some reasons for being cosidered high risk and what does this mean for the baby and the mother throughout the pregnancy?




A pregnancy may be considered high risk if the pregnant woman:
1 is 35 years old or older
2 is 15 years old or younger
3 is underweight or overweight prior to becoming pregnant
4 has had a premature baby
5 has had a baby with a birth defect, especially heart or genetic problems
6 has high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, lupus, asthma, a seizure disorder, or another longstanding medical problem
7 has an ethnic background in which genetic disorders are common (or a partner who does)
8 has a family history of mental retardation (or a partner who does)
