What is an offsite? why do companies do it?

many companies have "offsites" for certain departments. what exactly does an offsite mean and what do people do in it? what is the purpose of arranging the same and why do companies spend so much on these through the year? what beneficial results do they expect to recieve from the same?

As the name suggests, its "offsite" i.e, away from the place where the actual project is supposed to work.
Offsite is mainly a cost cutting strategy used companies,by choosing a offsite location ,where they get cheaper resources compared to on-site.
