Over-the-counter preparations containing aloe (Aloe barbadensis) are an effective treatment for sunburn, easingpain and inflammation while also relieving dryness of the skin. A variety of topical herbal remedies applied as lotions, poultices, or compresses may also help relieve the effects of sunburn. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is one of the most frequently recommended to reduce inflammation.

Other natural remedies include:

* Applying compresses dipped in cold water, one part skim milk mixed with four parts cold water, aluminum acetate antiseptic powder mixed with water, witch hazel, white vinegar, or baking soda mixed with water.
* Making a paste out of cornstarch and water, and applying directed to affected areas.
* Placing thin, cold slices of raw cucumber, potato, or apple on the burned areas.
* Making a soothing solution by boiling lettuce in water, strain, cool the water for several hours in the refrigerator, then use cotton balls to pat the liquid onto the skin.
* Applying tea bags soaked in cold water to burned eyelids.
* Soothing the burn with cool yogurt, then rinsing with a cold shower.

Prevention is the best remedy here, if you can. Long-term results from excessive exposure to the sun, such as skin cancer and wrinkled skin, can be avoided with proper precautions. One of the best preventatives is to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. You can get as much sun sightseeing as baking at the beach, so use sunscreen whenever you are outdoors.

Use an aloe vera lotion containing a sunblock. This will cut out 90% of the burning rays and allow 75% of the tanning rays to reach the skin.

To speed healing take the following supplements for a few days after getting burned: 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 400 I.U. of vitamin E, 15 mg of beta carotene, and 1-2 tablespoons (or about 3 capsules per teaspoon) of flaxseed oil, an essential fatty acid.

Make a paste of one Bayer-type aspirin (crushed), aloe vera gel, and vitamin A & D cream from a tube. Mix it together crushing up the aspirin as much as possible to have the large pieces crushed into small grains, as smooth a paste as you can make. I use the back part of a spoon to crush and smooth paste. Place on sunburn and cover up with old clothing. It will make the blisters go down and absorb the redness and the pain goes away also. Miracle cure!

There are 3 types of burns. 1st degree, 2nd degree, and 3rd
degree burns. 1st degree burns are described as having the red color
and pain. 2nd degree burns are accompanied by the red, pain, as well as
water bubbles.

If the bubbles are more than 2 inches in
diameter, seek professional help immediately. DO NOT POP THEM!! If
there is a discoloration in any of the oozing, again, seek professional
help immediately!!

3rd degree burns are all of the above and including patches of
white skin. This is the most dangerous form of sunburn. It is best to
seek medical attention immediately!!

***If there are any red or white streaks, go to the nearest ER and seek professional help.***

There are many forms of home remedies for the first 2 burn degrees.

1st degree and 2nd degree burns can easily be handled by placing
cool compresses to the damaged area. You can also use over the counter
medications but try to stay away from medications containing "cane or
caine" at the end. People are sensitive to the pain relief medications.
DO NOT PLACE OIL BASED PRODUCTS ON BURNS!! The old wives' tale about
placing butter on the burn can actually do more damage. The oil based
products can cause the pores of your skin to clog and keep the burn
from 'breathing', thus creating infection.

Try taking a cool shower. NOT COLD. Taking a cold shower or bath
can cause the body to go into shock. If you wish to take a bath, you
can add vinegar to your water. The vinegar will take out the sting from
the sunburn. You can also cook oatmeal and add it to your bath as well.

Potatoes can be used to relieve the pain from the sunburn. Take
2 potatoes and wash them well. Cut them into tiny chunks and place them
into a blender. Liquefy the potatoes. If they are looking dry, add a
little bit of water. Pat the areas with the potato juice. Wait until
dry and then take a cool shower.

You can also make an oatmeal pack. Cook oatmeal and wait until
it is cold. Place in the refrigerator if necessary. Again, taking a
shower to remove the oatmeal pack.

Once you have accomplished all of this, use Aloe Vera to add
moisture to the burn. Take larger quantities of liquids. If there are any signs of infection, seek professional
care at once!!
