How can i convert a movie to ipod format?

I bought an ipod 5G recently. I have plenty of movies in my system. But I heard that i cannot use those directly in the Ipod. [Movies in my system are in .avi format], Can you help me out on how I can convert these to the Ipod format. I would also like to put some youtube videos in my Ipod too.
