Are chinese toys Safe?

In the recent past a lot of noise was made about chinese toys in India which were hazardous to childrens' health. The reason for the same was that China was making incredibly cheap toys and it was doubted that they must be compromising on the quality of the material which went into the making of the toys to keep costs low. Do you think such dangerous toys are still there in the Indian market and are a threat to the health of our children? Do you think that it is better to buy Indian toys which may be a bit more expensive thna the chinese toys rather than compromise on the safety of your child? Are toys made in India a better and safer option or do they aloso carry the same risk?

In August alone the giant of the toy industry, Mattel recalled over nine million Chinese manufactured toys because they were painted with a lead based paint and/ or contained small magnets that could prove hazardous if swallowed... Just two weeks earlier they had recalled 1.5 million Fisher Price toddler and infant toys for lead paint safety issues. Polly Pocket, Barbie, Batman, and other figures came with accessories that included small magnets. At least one child died last year and nineteen others were hospitalized for ingesting these small magnets.
